No option to edit user profile is shown

Summary
Problem
When accessing a JIRA User Profile, the user is not shown an option to Edit the profile.
If the user attempts to manually access the Edit profile page: <BASE-URL>//secure/EditProfile!default.jspa?username=<USERNAME> the user is shown an error: "Editing your user details is not allowed on this JIRA instance"
Solution
Log into the JIRA instance and check the Configuring Jira application options, and determine if this is set to ON. If it is set to on External User Management is enabled and users will not be able to manage their profile within JIRA.
Resolution
This functionality is by design. If you are not using External User Management and instead using an Internal Directory, switch External User Management off. Ideally if you are using External User Management (such as an LDAP Server Connector for your User directory, keep External User Management ON).
