"The magic didn't happen" error when creating Jira project

Platform Notice: Cloud - This article applies to Atlassian products on the cloud platform.

Summary

While creating a project in Jira Cloud, the project isn't created, and an error appears: "For some reason, the magic didn't happen. Click Create to try again."

This can occur when creating either a team-managed project or a company-managed project in Jira.

Rename or eliminate duplicated issue types

Jira projects make use of existing content and configurations to prevent the need for duplicated work. However, if Jira finds two separate issue types with the same name but a different hierarchy, this can cause the project creation process to fail.

For example, if there's a manually created issue type named "Story" which is set as a sub-task hierarchy, new project creation will fail.

  1. As a Jira Administrator, Navigate to Settings (cog icon) > Issues > Issue types
  2. Check for any issue types that share the same name, but different places in hierarchy
  3. Rename any duplicated issue types
