Unable to Delete Issue Type Despite Having Zero Active Issues in Instance

Summary

You are unable to delete an issue type, even though there are 0 issues of this type in the active projects of your Jira instance. When attempting to delete the issue type, you encounter the following error message:

"Alternative issue type does not exist."

Environment

Cause


This error occurs because archived projects contain Jira issues of the issue type you are trying to delete.

Solution

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Restore Archived Projects:

    • Identify the archived projects that contain issues of the issue type you want to delete. If you are not able to identify the projects reach out to support team.

    • Restore these projects so that you can access and manage their issues.

  2. Move Issues to a Different Issue Type:

    • Navigate to the restored projects and locate the issues of the issue type you wish to delete.

    • Bulk move these issues to a different issue type that is valid for your projects.

  3. Delete the Issue Type:

    • Once all issues of the type you wish to delete have been moved to a different issue type, you can proceed to delete the original issue type without encountering any errors.
