Problem

After upgraded to Jira 7.x.x, project avatars will be missing and not  displayed with Error 403 in browser console as below . The project avatar images also cannot be updated:

Diagnosis

Environment

  • Linux OS
  • Jira 7.x.x

Cause

The project avatars are stored in $JIRA_HOME/data/avatars directory. The user did not have permission to access the content of that folder.

Resolution

Change the permission of the JIRA HOME directory to  755-(rwxr-xr-x) by performing the following steps so that The file's owner may read, write, and execute the file in that folder. All others may read and execute the file in the folder. This setting is common for programs that are used by all users:

  1. Stop JIRA service
  2. Open shell terminal and execute the following command to go to root folder of the JIRA HOME directory

    $ cd /var
  3. Then change the permission of the jira-home folder to 755.

    $ chmod -R 755 jira-home
  4. Start JIRA service
