Differences between "Execution against outcomes" and "Snapshot Progress" in Jira Align

Summary

This article is to identify the differences between the two widgets in the Strategy Room, "Execution against outcomes" and "Snapshot Progress"

Solution

Here's the Strategy Pyramid that we’re working with as an example:

As you can see, it says that we have 1 yearly goal and 1 theme. We also have 3 Portfolio objectives and 2 Portfolio Epics.

Execution Against Outcomes

Displays a list of Goals with the % of Accepted work items (work items associated with the actual goals).

Level

Percentage %

Yearly Goals

Shows the percentage of accepted Themes tied to goals (regardless of work item PI)

Portfolio/ Solution/ Program/ Team Objectives

Shows the percentage of accepted Epics and/or Capabilities and/or Features tied to objectives in each objective level (regardless of work item PI)

In the above example, the yearly goals are simply showing us the % of themes that are accepted/completed. In this example, I had one theme tied to the yearly goal and it was completed.

As for the Portfolio Objectives, as the right part of the screenshot mentions, it is just interested in the Portfolio Epics (Initiatives). So it displays the percentage of the total epics associated with the Portfolio Objective that are Accepted.

In our example, there are two epics that are linked to the Portfolio Objectives, and one out of the two is completed/Accepted. So the percentage displayed is 50%

Snapshot Progress

The Snapshot Progress Card counts Epics/Features assigned to the PIs from the snapshot

Immediately you will notice a difference here. It says that we have:

  • 2 Themes instead of 1

  • 3 Portfolio Epics instead of 1

That's because both the Strategy Pyramid and Execution Against Outcomes will consider only those items that are specifically linked to the objectives and goals.

For example, when we filter the Epics with all three PIs that are linked to my snapshot, then we can see that there are actually 3 Epics and not two.

The catch is that 1 of these Epics is not linked to the same Objective as the other two.

So this epic was not counted in the Execution Against Outcomes since it displays only the work items tied to goals or objectives in each goal or objective level

However, since the Snapshot Progress counts Epics/Features assigned to the PIs from the snapshot, even the ones that are not tied to an objective are listed here.

So coming back to our example, there are 3 Epics, and only one is accepted (1/3 = 33%)
