Documentation for GreenHopper 4.3.x . Documentation for other versions of JIRA Agile is available too.
GreenHopper is now called JIRA Agile. Learn more.

Kanban is an agile development methodology that aims to assist you in visualising the workflow, limiting the work in progress and measuring lead time for your projects (Kanban vs Scrum - Henrik Kniberg, 3rd April 2009).

GreenHopper allows you to set multiple constraints on each of your Task Board columns. Once a column exceeds one of its allocated constraints (i.e. by assigning/modifying issues), it will be highlighted in red to notify the team.

To add constraints to a Task Board column,

  1. Log into JIRA.
  2. Click the 'Agile' menu in the top navigation bar and select 'Task Board' from the dropdown that displays. The 'Task Board' will display.
  3. Select your project from the project dropdown in the top left of the Task Board (next to 'TASK BOARD'), if it is not already selected. The 'Task Board' will refresh with information for your project.
  4. Click the 'View' menu, then click the 'Compact (Kanban)' from the dropdown that displays.
  5. Locate the Task Board column that you want to add constraints too and click the black arrow in the top right of the column. The configuration menu for the column will display.
  6. Click 'Column Constraints'. The 'Column Constraints' window for the column will display. The default constraint is:
    • 'Standard Issue Count' — the number of 'standard' issues (i.e. excluding sub-tasks) that may belong to a given column at the same time.
(info) There may be other constraints if your administrator has set them up. Standard Issue Count was introduced in 4.2.1.
  7. Click the 'Edit' link for the relevant constraint and enter the maximum in the 'Capacity' field. E.g. if your business practice is to have no more than 5 issues in a particular column at any one time, you would specify 'Max'=5.
  8. Click 'Update'. Your changes will be saved.
  9. Close the 'Column Constraints' window. Your Task Board will refresh with the column constraints applied. If the constraints for the column are exceeded, the column will be highlighted in red.
