« Previous Version 4 Next »

With the release of Confluence 4.0, currently planned for early 2011, we will introduce a shiny new rich text editor. At the same time, the wiki markup editor will disappear.

About the New Editor

The changes in a nutshell:

  • From Confluence 4.0, there will be only one editor: the rich text editor, also known as a WYSIWYG editor. You will be able to switch to a source view (HTML view), but that view is not designed for use as a fully-featured editing mode. There will no longer be a wiki markup editor in Confluence.
  • The page content will be stored as XHTML. In earlier versions of Confluence, the content is stored as wiki markup.

The new editor's features in a nutshell:

  • All features of the existing Confluence rich text editor and wiki markup editor combined.
  • A new editing toolbar.
  • Full-screen editing.
  • Easy-to-use macro placeholders in the editor itself.
  • A platform on which we can build high-demand features in future releases.
  • Improved stability and consistency between editor mode and display mode.

Helping You to Manage the Change to the New Editor

When the Confluence 4.0 release date is closer, we will provide a detailed change management guide to help you with the transition from the earlier editor to the new editor. The change management guide will include:

  • A quick-reference guide describing the changes and telling you how to carry out the tasks you need. The format will be along the lines of 'what you did before' and 'what to do now'.
  • Details of the Confluence 4.0 Beta programme and links to the beta release notes as they become available.
  • A link to a sandbox installation of Confluence 4.0 Beta, where you will be able to try out the new editor.
  • A downloadable poster and quick-reference guides, in PDF form, that you will be able to print and distribute to your team.

It is still too early to produce the above guides and information. However, people are already asking important questions, which we will answer as soon as we can and in as much detail as is available.

In the meantime, please refer to the Confluence 4.0 editor FAQ.
