"invalid escape sequence" Exception Reported if LDAP Connection URL Also Includes DC or CN Information

Symptoms

The following exception is reported when testing connection with LDAP server:

2013-02-12 11:01:15,231 ERROR [btpool0-25 ] fisheye 
DefaultUserManager-getOrImportUser - Could not authenticate user 
"atlassian\ldap.user1"
com.cenqua.fisheye.user.AuthenticationException: LDAP: could not list users using (&(sAMAccountName=atlassian\ldap.user1)(!(userAccountControl:1.2.840.113556.1.4.803:=2))) on OU=Employees,OU=People (authenticated)

Caused
 by: javax.naming.directory.InvalidSearchFilterException: invalid escape
 sequence: [B@182623a0; remaining name 'OU=Employees,OU=People'

Cause

The LDAP connection URL is something like:

ldap://ldap.url.com:389/DC=atlassian,DC=com


and base DN is:

OU=Employees,OU=People

The LDAP connection URL should not contain the base DN information.

Resolution

Changing the connection details as follows, helps in resolving the issue:
LDAP URL:

ldap://ldap.url.com:389/


Base DN:

OU=Employees,OU=People,DC=atlassian,DC=com
