Announcement: Some Confluence features are going away

tip/resting Created with Sketch.

The Documentation theme and Status Updates have now both been removed from Confluence Cloud.

Confluence will be undergoing some exciting changes in the next 12 months. This blog is to give you some advance notice about features that we're discontinuing, and will be removing in the future.

Status updates

As part of our work to make Confluence simpler and easier to use, we've decided to remove the Status Updates feature. This includes the ability to:

  • update your status
  • see other people's status via their profile or the User Status List macro.

Our research tells us that this feature isn't very widely used, and we believe HipChat gives your team much better ways to share their status.

When is this happening?

The Status Update feature will be removed in mid August. We'll give you a heads up in our weekly Cloud updates blog the week before the change happens.

How do I know if we're using Status Updates?

Chances are you're not (it really isn't used by very many people at all). We'll be reaching out to the technical contact for any sites who are using Status Updates in the next few weeks.

What do I need to do?

You don't need to to anything. but if you have any questions or concerns, please comment on this ticket CONF-38253 - Getting issue details... STATUS .

Documentation theme

In the dim, distant past, the Documentation theme was the only way to have a sidebar with a nifty page tree in your Confluence space. But there's been a new kid on the block for a while now, the Confluence default theme, which also features a sidebar, page tree and a whole raft of great features (space shortcuts, JIRA links integration and sticky table headers, just to name a few).

We'll be removing the Documentation theme in future, and to help you switch, we've added some of your favourite documentation theme features to the default theme, including the ability to add:

  • a header and footer
  • custom content the content of the sidebar.

When is this happening?

Not for several months yet. We'll provide a lot more information closer to the time, but encourage you to consider switching themes as early as possible.

How do I know if we're using the Documentation theme?

One simple way to tell if you're using the Documentation theme is to have a look at the navigation options:

If there's a Browse menu in the header, you're using the Documentation theme.
If there's a Space Tools menu at the bottom of the sidebar, you're already using the default theme. Yay!

What do I need to do?

You don't need to do anything right now, but we strongly encourage you to give the default theme a try in your spaces.

To help you switch themes we've put together a step-by-step guide which covers everything from how to turn on the default theme, to how to copy over any wiki markup sidebar, header or footer content, and what to do if the Documentation theme is the global theme for your whole site.
