Sometimes you may need to modify sprints after they have been created, particularly if you are managing a large backlog. JIRA Agile lets you change the name and dates for any sprint that has not been completed yet. You can also move entire sprints up or down your board with a few clicks, if you want to have a logical order to your planned sprints.

Before you begin

  • This page only applies to Scrum boards.
  • You will need to have the JIRA 'Project Administrator' permission in the project(s) whose issues are included in the sprint, to edit or reorder a sprint.

Editing a sprint

You can only change the name and dates of sprints that have not been completed yet.

  1. Click the Agile link's down-arrow in the top navigation bar, then select your preferred board from the resulting dropdown menu.
  2. Click Backlog.
  3. Hover over the sprint name or date field, click and type the new name or date, then press Enter.
Note, the Start Date and End Date are not specified until you start the sprint.

Reordering a sprint

You can only reorder planned sprints, that is, you cannot reorder completed sprints nor the active sprint. Note, if you have the same sprints (or some subset of them) on different boards, the sprint order will be reflected across the boards.

  1. Click the Agile link's down-arrow in the top navigation bar, then select your preferred board from the resulting dropdown menu.
  2. Click Backlog.
  3. Click the ... icon (next to Start Sprint) for the sprint that you want to move, then choose Move sprint up or Move sprint down.
