29 September 2009
The Atlassian team are proud to announce the release GreenHopper 4.0.

GreenHopper 4.0 is the biggest GreenHopper release ever with a wide range of improvements and fixes. We've made a number of changes to improve the usability of GreenHopper including overhauling contexts, improving navigation within GreenHopper as well as extending the current list view to allow more fields.

The changes for this release aren't just UI-deep though. We've gotten into the nuts and bolts of GreenHopper and have improved its performance by switching to JQL, introduced compatibility with the JIRA Suite Utilities plugins for Task Board transitions, and have updated the Links Hierarchy Plugin to be JIRA 4.0 compatible.

Finally, we are happy to announce that four language packs are now available for GreenHopper. French, German, Japanese and Dutch language packs are included within GreenHopper 4.0.

Upgrading to GreenHopper 4.0 is free for all customers with an active GreenHopper license.

Highlights of GreenHopper 4.0

More Powerful Contexts

GreenHopper 4.0 now gives you even more control when viewing issues with a range of improvements to contexts. You can now select multiple filters for a context, multiple assignees and even combine a filter with custom criteria (e.g. show me only the bugs for a particular filter).

Unlimited Fields in List View

Keep even more information at your fingertips — GreenHopper now allows you to add as many fields as you want when configuring the 'List' view for issues in a project. The 'List' view is ideal for prioritising issues and now you can ensure that you have all the information available to rank an issue accurately.

Agile Gadget

GreenHopper has joined the gadget revolution in JIRA 4.0. We've rewritten and renamed the GreenHopper portlet — you can find it as the "Agile Gadget" when adding a gadget to your JIRA dashboard.

Support for the JIRA Suite Utilities plugin

The JIRA Suite Utilities plugin provides a useful set of tools for creating workflows. GreenHopper now supports the workflows customised using the JIRA Suite Utilities. For example, if you have added a required field to a transition using the JIRA Suite Utilities, it will display on the transition screen when you transition an issue in GreenHopper.

(question) Question: I'm not quite sure what this plugin had to do with — "When you resolve you have access to ABC resolutions but when you close you have access to XYZ resolutions."

Improvements to the GreenHopper Boards

We've added two new features to the GreenHopper boards to help make working with issues easier in this release of GreenHopper — wiki markup for wiki-rendered fields and the ability to move sub-tasks between issues.

If you have enabled wiki rendering on one or many fields in JIRA, you will be able to use wiki markup in the equivalent fields in GreenHopper cards.

Sub-tasks can now be moved between issues in GreenHopper by simply dragging and dropping the sub-task's card from one issue to another. GreenHopper will automatically update the relevant associations in JIRA.

Kanban

Kanban aims to assist you in visualising the workflow, limiting the work in progress and measuring lead time (Kanban vs Scrum - Henrik Kniberg, 3rd April 2009).

As of GreenHopper 4.0 you have the ability to set multiple constraints on your Task Board columns (or swim lanes in the agile parlance). When a column exceeds the allocated constraints it will be highlighted in red to warn you.

Time Tracking & 'Time Remaining' Statistic Constraints

As of JIRA 4.0 you can now set a Default Unit for time tracking and GreenHopper adheres to the default time tracking unit set.

Further, you can now track time against your versions with the addition of constraints on statistics in GreenHopper 4.0. The 'T. Remaining' statistic now has a minimum and maximum value that you can configure as desired.

Navigation Improvements

Finding your way around GreenHopper has never been easier. We've made a number of tweaks to improve navigation in GreenHopper.

  • Clicking the progress bar in the task board now directs you to issue navigator with the relevant issues.
  • Double-clicking an issue in summary or list view now displays the issue detailed card view, allowing you to edit it (even in search results).
  • Search results are paginated.
