Help! How do I configure Bamboo to be integrated with LDAP?

To integrate LDAP with Bamboo please consult  our Integrating Bamboo with LDAP documentation on confluence.

How do I know my LDAP settings are correct?

Our Atlassian team has developed Paddle to do just that (smile) .

Paddle is a tool that will test the LDAP or Active Directory settings in your atlassian-user.xml.

You can find further documentation on our Paddle Usage page.

Are there any known issues with LDAP integration?

Unfortunately, this is actually true. Below is a list of known issues:

  1. Issues with normal Bamboo operations for LDAP users who have undefined "full names".
  2. There are known User Group management issue if users with same user names exist on LDAP and local instance of Bamboo. Although, in such a scenario the LDAP user overrides the local Bamboo user.
  3. Unlike Confluence, Bamboo can't integrate with multiple LDAP repositories.
  4. It is not possible to perform XML backups of your Bamboo instance  when integrated with LDAP.  (There is actually  a work around for this issue . See: "How to back-up Bamboo?" topic below)

Note: Issues (1) and (2) have now been fixed with Bamboo 1.1.1 release. Although, It is recommended that LDAP users have "full names" assigned and not have duplicate user names on LDAP and Bamboo

Once LDAP has been enabled on Bamboo, why is it recommended not to revert back to local user management?

In some cases this could be detrimental to  your Bamboo instance: If an LDAP user has commented on builds, or  have set 'favourite' projects, then Bamboo might throw an exception due to missing users

How to back-up Bamboo?

For Bamboo versions prior to 1.2.2, exports will fail,  when integrated with LDAP, you need revert to local user management on Bamboo to back-up your XML data. To do this

  1. Edit the file .../webapp/WEB-INF/classes/atlassian-user.xml
  2. Comment out your LDAP repository.
  3. Please ensure that the following line is also active in your atlassian-user.xml(it should be there by default):
<hibernate name="Hibernate Repository" key="hibernateRepository" description="Hibernate Repository" />

   4.  Restart Bamboo for the changes to take effect.

   5.  You should be able to perform normal Backup after restarting.
