You can simply disable a gadget by removing it from the registered gadgets lists. Please see this page for more info on registering gadgets...http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/External+Gadgets

Is it possible to customise the list of macros which appear in the Insert menu?

Currently the items in the insert menu are fixed. Please file a feature request at http://jira.atlassian.com if you want them to be configurable.

Miscellaneous

I noticed the macro viewppt in Bill's earlier presentation, is this the new version of viewfile?

A: Yes. We split up the viewfile macro into multiple macros so that people can search for the specific filetype in the macro browser. The viewfile macro still works as well. See this page for more details: http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/View+File+Macro
