Configuring dashboards

Your dashboard is the main display you see when you log into your project. You can create multiple dashboards for different projects, or multiple dashboards for one big project.

Each project has a default dashboard, or you can create a personal dashboard and add gadgets to keep track of assignments and issues you're working on. Dashboards are designed to display gadgets that help you organize your projects, assignments, and achievements in different charts.

You can see all dashboards by selecting the Dashboards drop-down from your Jira header.

On this page:

About the default dashboard

The gadgets on the default dashboard can be reordered and switched between the left and right columns. Additional gadgets can also be added, while some gadgets can be configured. The layout of the dashboard (e.g. number of columns) can also be configured.

All changes made to the default dashboard will also change the dashboards of all users currently using the default dashboard. However, gadgets that users do not have permissions to see will not be displayed to them. For example, the 'Administration' gadget, although it may exist in the default dashboard configuration, will not be visible to non-admin users.

Creating a dashboard

You can easily create and customize your own dashboard to display the information you need. Note that only administrators can customize the default dashboard for your project.

  1. Navigate to an existing dashboard and at the top right of the dashboard, click more ().
  2. Select either Create Dashboard to create a blank dashboard, or Copy Dashboard to create a copy of the dashboard you are currently viewing.
  3. Name your dashboard and add a description so your team knows when to use it.
  4. Fill out the remaining fields and click Add

By default, sharing is set to private if you have not specified a personal preference. You can adjust this setting in the sharing preferences in your user profile, and change dashboard permissions at any time in the Manage Dashboards page.

Choosing a dashboard layout

To choose a different layout for your dashboard page (e.g. three columns instead of two):

  1. On the dashboard, click Edit Layout. A selection of layouts will be displayed:
  2. Select your preferred layout.

Managing gadgets

To get the most out of your dashboard, including adding, rearranging, removing, and configuring gadgets, see Adding and customizing gadgets

Sharing and editing your dashboard

You can edit the details for your dashboard, and restrict or share with other users according to the permissions that are set. In addition, you can see all the dashboards you've created, any public dashboards, and any shared dashboards.

  1. On the dashboard, click more () > Edit dashboard or Share dashboard.
  2. Edit the settings, as desired.

Search for an existing or shared dashboard

To search for a dashboard:

  1. In the Jira header, select Dashboards Manage dashboards.

  2. Select Search from the sidebar.
  3. Enter your search criteria into the search field and click the Search button.

A list of dashboards matching your search criteria is shown below. Each shared dashboard indicates its:

  • Current owner — this is originally the user who created the shared dashboard

  • List of shares applied to the shared dashboard by its owner

Jira looks for exact matches to the search terms you enter in the search field. You can use different operators to help you find wildcard or fuzzy matches to your search queries. For example:

  • Use the fuzzy search operator to help find dashboards that might contain mispellings:

  • Use the wildcard search operator to help find dashboards that begin with a phrase:

Managing dashboards and permissions

You can edit, delete, copy, and share your dashboards from the 'Manage Dashboards' page.

  1. In the Jira header, select Dashboards > Manage dashboards.
  2. Manage the dashboard, as desired.

Adding favorite dashboards

If you find a dashboard you use frequently, you can add it to your favorite dashboards. This means that it will display when you click the Dashboards menu in the Jira header. Any dashboard that you can access can be added to your favorites, including the default dashboard.

  1. In the Jira header, select Dashboards Manage dashboards.
  2. Click the star icon next to the dashboard's name.

Managing shared dashboards

Jira administrators, as set in the global permissions for Jira, can manage their users' shared dashboards in the Shared dashboards menu. Administrators can also change the ownership of a dashboard if the creator is unable to maintain the dashboard or its gadgets. See Managing shared dashboards for more information.

Setting up a wallboard

Turn any Jira application dashboard into a wallboard by plugging your computer into a TV monitor. The wallboard is a dashboard gadget that acts as an information radiator to provide instant visual insight into project progress and team accomplishments. With your favorite dashboard selected, click more () > View as Wallboard. The dashboard will appear against a black background, and will rotate gadgets if the user enables the slideshow option.

The Wallboard below shows the same Created vs. Resolved Issues gadgets and data above.
