A sprint — also known as an iteration — is a short (ideally two to four week) period in which the development team implements and delivers a discrete product increment, e.g. a working milestone version.

You may want to create multiple sprints, allowing you to plan several iterations ahead. (Note that only one sprint can be active at a time – the rest are referred to as "future sprints".)

(info) This page only applies to Scrum boards that have Ranking enabled.
(info) Note that you can only create a new sprint if you have the 'Administer Projects' permission in all projects included in this board's filter (or in all JIRA projects, if you are using GreenHopper 6.0.5 or earlier and the board's filter does not include specific projects).

To create a new sprint,

  1. Log in to JIRA.
  2. Click the Agile link's down-arrow in the top navigation bar, then select your preferred board from the resulting dropdown menu.

  3. Your board will be displayed. Click Plan.
  4. Click the Add Sprint button at the top of the backlog.

Your new 'upcoming' sprint will be added to your board, below any other future sprints. If you wish, you can edit the name, start date and end date.
