Confluence throws Error Recording Default Paths exception configuring the trial database

Problem
An error, 'Error recording default paths to system' is displayed on screen after selecting 'Trial Installation' in the Confluence Setup Wizard. The setup wizard appears to complete, but results in the error. Restarting Confluence will result in a 'Spring Application Context has not been set' error on screen.
The following appears in the atlassian-confluence.log:

Diagnosis
Environment
- An outbound proxy is configured on the machine where the Confluence Setup Wizard is run
Diagnostic Steps
- You've attempted the resolutions in Confluence does not start due to Spring Application context has not been set but are still experiencing the behavior
Cause
There is an outbound proxy server or firewall in place that is blocking required traffic.
Resolution
Some options to workaround this issue include:
- Run the Confluence setup wizard from a machine that is not configured with an outbound proxy
Run the Confluence setup wizard directly on the server via localhost
Configure the outbound proxy/firewall allow traffic to pass thru
