Symptoms

Using Internet Explorer (IE), clicking on the Edit Document button rendered by the viewfile macro or when trying to edit document in the attachment panel, a pop up window appears with the following message:

The URL for this file is too long for the application. A temporary copy of this file will be opened on your computer. You must save this copy as a new file.

In some cases, IE may not show any message and clicking the Edit Document button does not appear to do anything. In contrast, Firefox allows editing the document without any issue.

Cause

Internet Explorer is applying a 255 character limit.

Resolution
