Problem

 After trying to start or upgrade Confluence, the following appears in the atlassian-confluence.log

Cause

The <confluence-install-directory>/confluence/WEB-INF/web.xml might have been edited and the following entry might exist inside this file:

classpath:/wikiToXhtmlMigrationContext.xml

Or this entry in case you are upgrading Confluence to version 5.7.0 to latest:

classpath:/javasimonContext.xml

Resolution

  • Edit the <confluence-install-directory>/confluence/WEB-INF/web.xml file and verify whether you can find an entry for "classpath:/wikiToXhtmlMigrationContext.xml" or "classpath:/javasimonContext.xml". If so:
    1. Shutdown Confluence.
    2. Save a backup copy of this web.xml file.
    3. Download a new zip installation from our website (https://www.atlassian.com/software/confluence/download-archives) of the same version as the one you're currently running.
    4. Unzip the installation folder.
    5. Go under confluence/WEB-INF/ within this new installation folder and copy the web.xml file over to your original Confluence, replacing the older file.
    6. If you have customizations on web.xml file, like running confluence over SSL, you will need to re apply those modifications.
    7. Start your Confluence again.

(info) You can delete the new Confluence you've just downloaded after this process.
