Create a migration plan
Creating a migration plan involves selecting the entities you’d like to migrate from your migration environment to the cloud instance using the Cloud-hosted migration assistant. What is the Cloud-hosted migration assistant?
This page provides instructions on how to create a migration plan.
The Cloud-hosted migration assistant is currently available only to a limited number of customers participating in an early access program. We are not enrolling new customers at this time, but we will keep you updated when we reopen enrollment.
Before you begin
Make sure to complete the following tasks before you initiate data copy:
Set up your Data Center and Cloud instances for migration
Set up a database for the Cloud-hosted migration assistant
Create a migration plan
Only one plan can be migrated to the cloud instance at a time. You can’t run multiple migration plans simultaneously.
Once the data from your Data Center is copied into the migration environment, you can create a migration plan:
Go to Atlassian Administration. Select Data management and then Delta migration.
Select Create migration and name your migration plan, and select Next.
Select the migration method. You can choose to migrate users and/or projects.
The Migrate users in advance option allows you to migrate only users and groups.
The Migrate projects option, you’ll be given the option to migrate all projects or select specific projects.
With both these options, Marketplace apps and their data will not be migrated. You’ll need to contact support to migrate app data. For the list of entities migrated, read What data is migrated using the Cloud-migration assistant?
Select Save and run checks after you’ve selected your migration methods
Run pre-migration check
After you create your plan and select the migration method, we’ll run a pre-migration check for the plan. The pre-migration check verifies if ensure that your configuration is correct and your data can be migrated to the cloud.
Here’s a description of the pre-migration statuses:
Status | Description |
|---|---|
Passed | Everything is good. You can proceed with your migration. |
Warning | You can proceed, but there could be potential issues with the migration. Expand the warning messages to view details. |
Failed | Expand the error messages to view details and resolve them to proceed. In some cases, you will have the option to download a CSV. To resolve the error:
|
Error | This will require you to either update source data before proceeding or provide additional information to resolve the error. If you see a Fix error option:
|
Once the check is complete, resolve any errors and select Next to proceed.
Review and start migration
Once the pre-migration check is complete, you can review the migration plan and select Migrate now to begin the migration immediately, or Migrate later.
Once the migration begins, you can monitor its progress on the dashboard. To view the dashboard:
Go to Atlassian Administration.
Select Data management and Delta migrations.
Select your migration plan.
Here’s a description of the statuses on the dashboard:
Status | Description |
|---|---|
Saved | The migration plan is saved. The data is ready for migration. |
Running | The migration is in progress. |
Migrated | The data has been migrated successfully. |
Incomplete | The migration is complete, but there are errors or entities that couldn’t be migrated. This also means that some data (users, groups, projects, etc.) has been migrated, and you may need to manually delete this data before initiating migration again. |
Failed | The migration has failed due to an unexpected error. Either no data or some data has been migrated. You may need to manually delete it before initiating migration again. |
Next steps
Once the migration ends, select the migration plan on the dashboard to download the following reports as a ZIP file:
Pre‑migration report: List of entities that you planned to migrate (projects, users, groups, config items)
Post‑migration report: List of entities that you successfully migrated for this plan.
Error log: List of errors with error codes. It includes messages indicating which project/entity failed and why, and how they can be resolved.
Many common data issues can also be fixed by downloading a CSV file, incorporating the recommended fixes, and re-uploading the CSV file.
