Purpose

If you deployed Hipchat Server from an OVA image, Hipchat Server is running in dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) mode (if DHCP is available), and will have its IP address, netmask, gateway, and DNS provided by your DHCP Server. If you are trying to install Hipchat Server OVA in a VM but the server never boots up and server terminal never appeared, you can try out the resolution below. Since the server terminal does not appear you won't be able to view the IP address to access the server from the browser to complete the installation.

Solution

You can set the server IP setting to DHCP during the OVA import. During the OVA import, VMware's vCenter software prompts you for some settings, like the alerts email address and the network mode. It's in that dialog, before the VM is booted, that you set network to DHCP. Once the server boots up, access the server from the browser using the IP address displayed in the server terminal.

This is only applicable to importing the OVA using VMware vCenter software, a cluster management application. Importing directly to Workstation, Fusion, ESX etc does not prompt for OVA settings and just boots the VM without configuring it.
