ClassFormatError Truncated class file

Symptoms

The following appears in the atlassian-jira.log:

java.lang.ClassFormatError: Truncated class file
at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass1(Native Method)
at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass(ClassLoader.java:616)
at java.security.SecureClassLoader.defineClass(SecureClassLoader.java:124)
at java.net.URLClassLoader.defineClass(URLClassLoader.java:260)
at java.net.URLClassLoader.access$000(URLClassLoader.java:56)

Cause

The 'Work' directory is corrupted

Workaround

  1. Shutdown JIRA
  2. Delete JIRA_INSTALL/work directory
  3. Restart JIRA to generate the work directory again
