Summary
The Resolution field in Jira is intended to be set when issues are transitioned to a new status. This can be done automatically via a workflow or manually with a transition screen.
Choose between automatic or selectable resolutions
First, identify the Workflow being used by your Project.
Then, choose whether you want this project to set resolutions automatically, or manually select them.
Set resolution automatically using a workflow post function
- Locate your Workflow: > Issues > Workflows
- Click Edit under Actions for your workflow
- Select the Done transition, and select Post Functions
- Click Add Post Function > Select Update Issue Field
- Select Resolution for Issue Field and the appropriate Field Value
Set resolution selectively using a transition screen
- Locate your Workflow: > Issues > Workflows
- Click Edit under Actions for your workflow
Select the Done transition and Click Edit
-
Please note that we are selecting the Done transition and not the Done status - only the transition will give you the option of using a screen
-
Select the Resolve Issue Screen for the Screen field
By Default, Jira comes with a "Resolve Issue Screen"
- You can also use your own screen, however it is very important that the Resolution Field is only visible on a "Resolve Issue" type screen
- If Resolution is added to a "Default" Screen, newly created or edited issues will be in a Resolved state immediately as the field would be populated by the Default Resolution Value
- You must return to the Workflow page and Publish the draft in order for the changes to go into effect
