This page show address a problem of users who are facing difficulties to Enable/Disable the CAPTCHA feature in Jira given the option does not appear.

Scenario

Normally, by simply following the steps below, it is possible to enable and disable the CAPTCHA feature.

  1. Log in to Jira Data Center as an administrator.
  2. Go to the "System" menu and click on "General Configuration."
  3. Click on Edit Settings.
  4. Scroll down to the "CAPTCHA" section and uncheck the "Enable/Disable CAPTCHA" option.
  5. Click on "Save" to save your changes.

But sometimes due to a few different reasons, the CAPTCHA feature is not available in the path above described. In this case, we'll need to determine if the unified.usermanagement flag is enabled under the Dark Features.

A common reason for that is when you are on Jira Cloud, migrate to Jira Data Center, and this configuration is not carried over during the migration. But mainly it happens due to a flag enabled at the Jira Dark Features.

Diagnoses

To identify if we're dealing with the flag enabled at the DarkFeatures, please follow the below steps:

  1. Access <JiraURL>/secure/admin/SiteDarkFeatures!default.jspa
  2. Look for the unified.usermanagement flag in the list of features enabled

Solution

Disable the unified.usermanagement flag from the Dark Features page, and then once again perform the steps below to enable/disable the CAPTCHA.

The CAPTCHA should be either enabled or disabled according to what you performed.
