Summary

  • The Issues in Epic session of an Epic view shows some issues out of order.

Environment

Jira 9.x

Diagnosis

  • When checking the issues listed under the Issues in Epic view, an issue is displayed out of the order.
  • In the example below, the epic issue SCRUM-63 is displaying the issue SCRUM-70 between SCRUM-65 and SCRUM-67 instead of between SCRUM-60 and SCRUM-71.

Cause

  • This could be caused if an issue is moved to a different Project and moved back to the original project or if the issue was moved to a different position from the Board View.

Solution

  • According to the KB article Ranking an Issue, the Rank field is the one used to order issues under the Issues in Epic session, and the rank field is defined by the order of issues in the Board view.

Workaround

Considering that the Rank field is defined in the Board View, it would be possible to create a new Board specifically for this epic, so we can re-order those issues.

  1. Go to Issues > Search and run the JQL (replacing with the Epic Issue key):

"Epic Link" = SCRUM-63 ORDER BY Rank ASC

  2.  Save it as a filter.
  3. Go to Boards > View All Boards > Create Board
  4. Create a new 'Board from an existing Saved Filter', using the filter saved in the previous steps.
  5. This new board will display all issues under the Epic SCRUM-63
  6. If there are issues already closed for this Epic, in the Board select Configure > Columns and move those resolved statuses to another column.
  7. Now the Board should display all the issues linked to the epic, using the Rank field to order.
  8. If you drag and drop issue SCRUM-70 above SCRUM-71, the same would reflect in the Issue View for the Issues in the Epic session.
  9. Issues in View after changing the order:
