You can remove an issue from a planned sprint, or from the sprint that is currently in progress (the active sprint).

(info) Please note:

  • This page only applies to Scrum boards.

  • You will need to have the 'Edit Issue' permission in the project to which the issue belongs.
  • If you are moving the issue above or below other issues, you will need to have the 'Schedule Issue' permission in the project to which the issue belongs.

Removing an Issue from a Planned Sprint

A planned sprint is a sprint which not yet started. Your planned sprints are visible in  Plan mode, but not in Work mode (since Work mode only shows the active sprint).

To remove an issue from a planned sprint,

  1. Log in to JIRA.
  2. Click the Agile link's down-arrow in the top navigation bar, then select your preferred board from the resulting dropdown menu.

  3. Your board will be displayed.
  4. Click Plan.
  5. Drag the issue out of the planned sprint and into another sprint or into the backlog.

Removing an Issue from an Active Sprint

Sometimes you may need to remove an issue from an active sprint — that is, a sprint which is currently in progress (ie. the sprint which is currently visible in Work mode). Note that removing an issue from an active sprint will be shown as a 'scope change' event on the Burndown Chart for that sprint.

To remove an issue from the active sprint,

  1. Log in to JIRA.
  2. Click the Agile link's down-arrow in the top navigation bar, then select your preferred board from the resulting dropdown menu.

  3. Your board will be displayed.
  4. Either:
    • Click Plan, then drag the issue out of the planned sprint and into another sprint or into the backlog.
      or:
    • Click Work, then click the issue key to display the Detail View. Select Remove from Sprint from the cog menu (see screenshot below).
(info) Note that you cannot remove a sub-task from a sprint, as sub-tasks always belong to the same sprint as their parent.
