Symptoms

One or several users have multiple entries in the People Directory. Duplicated users are not shown in @mentions or shares.

Diagnosis and Resolutions

There are two possible causes for this - either a corrupt search index, or duplicated entries in the database.

  1. A corrupted search index. Rebuild the index from Administration > Content Indexing. If that fails, try rebuilding the index from scratch. NB: If you use Atlassian Cloud, you may need to contact Support to perform the reindex, as per  CONFSERVER-33400 - Confluence Administrators unable to Reindex Manually.
  2. You may be experiencing a bug that causes duplicate data in the database. Please follow the workarounds in the bug reports below to resolve the issue.

    1. Duplicated USERINFO rows in the database. CONFSERVER-30050 - Users are duplicated in the People Directory, shares, mentions, and have two USERINFO records in the database. This is fixed on Confluence 5.9.8 or later
    2. Duplicated entries in the user_mapping table. CONFSERVER-36018 - Duplicates in the People Directory due to duplicates in the user_mapping table
    3. CONFSERVER-54971 - Unknown Users appears in Mentions, permissions, etc due to duplicates in the user_mapping table
    4. CONFSERVER-56554 - Users are duplicated in the search results due to duplicated USERINFO records in the database
