Problem

When a JIRA link is pasted into the Confluence editor, if an application link to this JIRA instance has been set up, the link should auto-convert to become a JIRA issues macro. When this fails, the JIRA link will remains as a regular URL. This KB describes a few causes that can prevent the conversion from happening.

Cause

Cause 1

The auto-convert mechanism related to Jira Issues relies on the following plugins in Confluence:

  • JIRA Macros Plugin

  • jira-connector

  • Confluence Paste Plugin

  • Confluence Quick Edit Plugin

These plugins, or the modules contained within these plugins, may be disabled.

Cause 2

Check if the Redirection plugin on version earlier than 5.3.2 is installed and enabled.

Versions below 5.3.2 of this plugin are known to cause problems on the auto-convert functionality.

Resolution

Cause 1

  1. Navigate to Confluence Admin > Manage Add-Ons.
  2. Select "All Add-ons" in the dropdown
  3. Locate each of the three related plugins to make sure they show up and are enabled
  4. Expand each plugin and make sure that all of each plugin's modules are enabled

If any of these plugins or modules are disabled, please schedule a short downtime to clear the Confluence plugin cache: How to clear Confluence plugins cache.

Cause 2

You may choose to temporarily disable the Redirection plugin in order to test if this is really causing the problem or to upgrade to the latest version.

Either way, follow the procedure below:

  1. Go to Cog Icon > Manage Apps.
  2. Filter for Redirection plugin.
  3. Here you have two options.
    • Temporarily disable this plugin. – This can be used to validate before applying the upgrade
    • Permanently upgrade this plugin to the latest version  – If this is confirmed to cause the problem, then upgrading should be the permanent solution (version 5.3.2 resolved the bug)
  4. Access a testing Confluence page.
  5. Before clicking on the edit button, reload the page overriding the current cache.
    • Check this page to know how to perform this on different browsers.
    • This step is important, since it will remove any cached content and reload new items after you disabled or updated the plugin.
  6. After reloading the page on view mode, click on the Edit button.
  7. Do the same reload overriding the cache while on the edit mode of the page.
  8. Now try to paste the link of a Jira Issue.
