When you upgrade or renew your JIRA license, you will receive a new license key. You will need to update your JIRA server with the new license key.

(info) You can access your license key via http://my.atlassian.com

To update your JIRA license key:

  1. Log in to JIRA as a user with the 'JIRA System Administrators' global permission.
  2. Choose > System. Select License to view your existing JIRA license details.
    (tick) Keyboard shortcut: 'g' + 'g' + start typing 'license'
  3. Paste your new license into this box.
    (info) You can retrieve existing licenses or generate an evaluation one by clicking the 'My Account' link.
  4. Click the 'Add' button to update the JIRA installation with the new license.

Do you have a user-limited license?

If you have a user-limited license (such as a starter license), then the user limit of your license will be displayed on the 'License Details' page. This field is periodically refreshed, but you can retrieve the latest user limit by clicking the 'Refresh' button.

Reducing your user count

You may want to reduce your user count in JIRA if you have exceeded your user count or if you want to change to a lower-tier license to reduce costs.

The recommended method for reducing your user count in JIRA is to remove users from all groups with the 'JIRA Users' global permission. This is described in the following knowledge base article: Unable to Create Issues Due to Exceeded License.

Alternatively, if you have connected JIRA to an LDAP directory, you may want configure JIRA to synchronise a subset of users from LDAP rather than all users. This is described in Reduce the number of users synchronised from LDAP to JIRA. However, this can be a complicated procedure and we recommend that you do not use this method unless necessary.

(warning) Note, if you exceed the user count allowed by your JIRA license, your users will not be able to create issues.

  1. If I import from an expired JIRA license, how would I update the license to a current one?

    If I try to log into the restored JIRA instance, I get an error page that states I have an expired license and no way to enter a new one.

    2. I know it's probably way too late for you but maybe it will help others.

      I have a solution if you use an MSSQL 2008 database but others are probably very similar. Remember: Make a backup first and do this at your own risk. It worked for me but this might not be the best solution.

      Steps 3 and 4 may be unecessary but I don't know if the ID is the same for every instance or if it may vary. Maybe someone else who tries this out can report back on that...

       

      1. Stop JIRA
      2. Connect to your database with e.g. MS SMS
      3. Execute this query with the according database name (for old JIRA versions have a look at my edit down below):

        You should get only one entry.

      4. What you need from this entry is the ID value. For me it's 10021
      5. Go to the table [jiraschema].[propertytext] and look for the entry with the ID corresponding to the value you determined in the last step (e.g.10021).
      6. The "propertyvalue" column of this entry contains the old license key which you now can replace with your new one.
        Attention: If you copy the key directly from your myatlassian account, it contains linebreaks which you will have to remove manually. Just copy the key into any texteditor and remove any linebreaks.

      Also, this is for the newer versions of JIRA. I Suspect that 'License20' referes to the licence format 2.0 (new licenses). If you have an old instance of JIRA and therefore an old license, the correct query for step 3 probably looks something like this (assuming that part of the database layout hasn't changed since then):

    Does it mean that before importing the JIRA instance & restoring the backup to another server, we will need to update the license?

    Else, upon restoration of JIRA to another server, it will not be possible to update the license information anymore?

    For older JIRA version, e.g. 3.3, do you know if it is still possible to renew the license?

    I have a little doubt about the JIRA licenses, my Jira license will expire in the next friday.

    What it will affect me? My Jira will not be available to use or from this date I just can´t update and request support?

    Can someone tell me what happens in the following situation:

    1.  Let's say that my JIRA license expired on August 22nd, 2012.
    2.  Let's further say that an updated version of JIRA was released shortly before that date, like for instance, JIRA version 5.1.3 which was released on August 20th, 2012.
    3.  And lastly, let's say that between August 20th and August 22nd, the 5.1.3 update was not installed.  Perhaps I had other tasks that needed tending to on those days, for instance.

    What I want to know is, will I, on a date after August 22nd, 2012, be able to upgrade to JIRA version 5.1.3?  It seems like I should be able to, since version 5.1.3 was released before my license expired.  So in theory I should be able to install/upgrade to that version, whether I do it on August 21st, August 25th, or December five years from now.  However, the documentation doesn't seem to provide much clarity on this point.

    So which is it, do I have perpetual access to any/all updates to JIRA that are published before my license expires, or does JIRA completely disable its ability to apply any update, regardless of publication date, when the license expires?

      Tried this myself, and it worked without issue.  It appears that you're allowed to upgrade to any version that is released before your license expires, regardless of when you actually happen to perform the upgrade.

        Actually, I take that back.  There was one major issue with Greenhopper, after the plugin manager tried to update to Greenhopper version 6.0.2 (released on August 30th and therefore outside of the license).  I had to completely remove Greenhopper, re-import the data from the old server, and manually install Greenhopper version 6.0.1 (released August 12th).  After doing that I then had to use the following workaround to get Greenhopper to actually enable itself:

        GreenHopper disabled with the error License is for an older version and maintenance has expired

  7. Hi, We are changing our JIRA server to a newer one, I was wondering what will happen with the licenses? Would they work on the new machine or should I apply for new ones?

    Choose the cog icon  at top right of the screen, then choose JIRA Admin.

      Which version of JIRA are you using? This documentation is for the JIRA 6.0 EAP. Earlier versions of JIRA do not have the same header.
