Watch Pages, Spaces and Blogs

You can 'watch' a Confluence page, blog post or space. Confluence will then send you a notification email whenever anyone updates your watched content.

You'll receive email notifications for:

  • Edits (unless the author clears the 'Notify watchers' check box).
  • Deletions.
  • Attachments, including new versions or deletions of an existing attachment.
  • Comments, including new comments, edits of existing comments or deletions of existing comments.

By default, Confluence will assign you as a watcher of any page or blog post that you create or edit. This behaviour is called 'autowatch'.

There's no daily digest for email notifications. You'll receive an email notification every time someone makes a change.

You will not receive email notifications for content changes due to the output of a macro, because the page content itself hasn't been edited.

You need 'View' permission for the page, blog post or space to receive notifications.

Watching a page or blog post

To start watching a page or blog post:

  1. Go to the page or blog post
  2. Choose Watch and select the relevant check box

To stop watching the page or post, deselect the relevant check box.

Watching an entire space

You can choose to watch all the pages and blog posts in a particular space.

The quickest way is to use the Watch option on a page or blog post, as described above.

To stop watching the space, deselect the relevant check box.

Alternatively, choose Pages in the space sidebar, then choose Watch this space at the top right.

If your space uses the Documentation theme, choose Browse > Space Operations. Then choose Watch this space in the left-hand menu.

Watch for new blog posts in a space

You can choose to receive a notification whenever someone adds a blog post in the space. You will not receive notification of updates to or deletions of blog posts, nor of comments on the blog posts.

To watch for new posts:

  1. Go to a blog post in the space
  2. Choose Watch and select Watch all blog posts in this space

To stop watching for new blog posts, deselect the relevant check box. Alternatively, choose  Blog  in the space sidebar, then choose  Watch this blog  at the top right.

If your space uses the Documentation theme, choose Browse > Space Operations. Then choose Watch this blog in the left-hand menu.

Watch all spaces on the site

You can receive notifications about changes to the content of pages, blog posts and comments from all spaces on a Confluence site.

To start watching for content changes across the whole site:

  1. Choose your profile picture at top right of the screen, then choose Settings
  2. Choose Email
  3. Choose Edit then choose Subscribe to daily updates
  4. Choose Submit

Watching for all new blog posts on the site

You can choose to watch for all new blog posts in all spaces on the Confluence site. You will not receive notification of updates to or deletions of blog posts, nor of comments on the blog posts.

To start watching for all new blog posts:

  1. Choose your profile picture at top right of the screen, then choose Settings
  2. Choose Email
  3. Choose Edit then choose Subscribe to all blog posts
  4. Choose Submit

Manage watches from your user profile

The 'Watches' page in your user profile displays a list of all pages and spaces you are currently watching.

To manage your watches:

  1. Choose your profile picture at top right of the screen, then choose Watches
  2. Choose Stop Watching for any unwanted spaces or pages

Manage watches from the email message

The email notifications that you receive from Confluence have some useful links at the bottom of the email message. The links in each message vary, depending on the context. In general, the links allow you to view the page online, reply to a comment, and so on.

In particular with respect to setting your notification preferences, you will see one or more of the following links:

  • Stop watching page – Click this link to stop watching the page that triggered the email notification.
  • Stop watching space – Click this link to stop watching the space that triggered the email notification.
  • Stop following this user – Click this link to stop following the user whose update triggered the email notification.
  • Manage Notifications – Click this link to go to the email settings page in your user profile.

Screenshot: Example email notification footer showing links

Autowatch and other notification options

By default, Confluence will assign you as a watcher of any page or blog post that you create or edit. This behaviour is called 'autowatch'. You can turn autowatch on or off, and set other notification options, in the email settings section of your user profile. See Edit Your User Settings.

It would be helpful if you could watch a page and all its children. For example, we set up project pages within our office's Wiki Space. Each project page has multiple child pages related to that project. If team members could watch the project page and all of the child pages. In this way, they could be notified when new pages are created and be automatically following them.

If you want this functionality is it still necessary to install the plugin or is this something that is available in either 4.0 or 4.1?

As of Confluence 4.1, the best way to watch a tree of pages with the default plugin set is still to watch a space - we recommend using a space per project for this reason. Otherwise, you'll still need to use the Descendant Notification Plugin.

Hey Paul, tkhnas for commenting! I knew when I posted this you’d probably see it and either agree or get annoyed, or a bit of both, so apologies for that. It’s really just a good example and the one that prompted me to write this in the first place (had the draft sitting around for ages!)I see your point about that use case for noreply, but let’s remember that it’s not up to us to decide when a user will feel like responding, and to what. What if they wanted to reply to your notification message to let you know the template is screwed up, or a variable didn’t get expanded?eg. “Hello < % firstname %> !” which I actually received in an email notification recently, from – you guessed it – a noreply email address.

How often are the email notifiations sent out?  With every change?  Once a day?  And if once a day, is there a way to change that?  Even better, is there a way to allow the watcher to specify how often s/he wants to be notified of changes?

      Hi Bill,

The page notifications are sent out for every change in the page. The emails will be waiting in a queue that flushes every minute. To change this frequency, you can modify the cronExpression of mailQueueTrigger in schedulingSubsystemContext.xml. There is a similar tutorial on how to change the schedule of Confluence daily backup that may serve you as a reference:

I am afraid that it is currently impossible to set the schedule per user.

Hope that could be of some assistance,

      Hi Yuan,

One way that I can think of is by editing <confluence-install>\confluence\template\custom\content-editor.vm. Try to look for the following line:

      <input id="minorEdit" type="checkbox" name="minorEdit" value="true" #if ($minorEdit) checked="checked" #end />

      Hope that helps!

I am afraid that what you are facing here is a bug since I try to reproduce in our local Confluence instance and the same problem occurred. I have created a bug report on behalf of this issue. Feel free to add your comment and add yourself as a watcher. The link to bug report is attached below:

So, there is currently no way to watch specific news in confluence? Its either you can subscribe to RSS all of the news or none?

It would be extremely useful to watch news based on the labels.

I currently have a page with

    Blog stream

Create a blog post to share news and announcements with your team and company.

and I would want users to subscribe to that page to get the notifications when new _news_ articles are pulled by that page.

Or, like I said above, subscribe to news based on the labels would be a much more elegant solution.

Please let me know if there's a workaround.

    Hi

I am trying to setup the appropriate SMTP information in the Mail Servers, and when I try to send the test mail, it fails with the following error and need your help troubleshooting. I have validated with our internal IT staff that the SMTP address I am entering is correct.

An error has occurred with sending the test email:

     at com.atlassian.confluence.admin.actions.mail.SendTestEmailAction.execute(SendTestEmailAction.java:52)

Hi, please ignore the above post, we figured out the issue. The invalid address above was referring to the invalid senders address. Sorry for any inconvenience

      Hi Lumina,

From the error log, it seems to be that there is an issue with the destination or source address, which may be invalid. Can you please check that the "From:" address in the configuration page is correct as well?

If that does not help, please raise a support ticket to https://support.atlassian.com, so that your issue can be further investigated. Also provide the following:

      1. A copy of atlassian-confluence.log
      2. The details of the configurations. Please also provide a screenshot of that page.

My problem: when I receive an email notification, I am asked to login to the website.

My Confluence instance sits behind a Server with BASIC authentication.
The (HTML) email notifications include a reference to the css file hosted in the site.
(It uses this velocity file: templates/email/html/includes/header.vm)

There is a way to override this Velocity file in the Configuration (not editing the file in the confluence server)?

      Jack Low [Atlassian]

      Hi Daniel,
There is no way to achieve that via Confluence UI configuration. Also, it might not be as easy as just modifying the velocity file.

As far as I know, there is a third party plugin that provides seamless login to Confluence - NTLM Authenticator. It allows you to use your windows login (which must be integrated with a LDAP or AD) to logon to Confluence. That eliminates the trouble of multiple login to Confluence (whenever you click a Confluence link, view a Confluence notification, or open a browser to access Confluence page).

However, Atlassian does not provide support for this plugin. You'd need to contact the plugin author if you run into any problem while configuring/using this plugin.

Hope it helps. Please feel free to ask a again if you need further assistance.

      Cheers,
      Jack

This is a feature. There is an option to let you receive emails for changes you make that you can enable called "Notify on my actions" in your email notification preferences (go to your login menu > "Settings"  and select the "Email" section on the left-hand panel). This is off by default in Confluence.

    Hello,

Watching a space or page is great, however we have users who don't want to be alerted everytime an attachment is added (they range from a screenshot to PDF updates etc)..

Is there a function whereby attachment notification can be turned off for all watchers in Confluence? - it is really annoying to the end user and it takes the importance of the 'Notify Watches' of an overall update on a page when released...

Can you please advise if there is such a switch or plugin that I can unplug-in?

How can I tell Confluence 4.2 not to email me the entire page when an edit is made? I want to be notified that a page has changed, but I don't need to see an entire copy of the page. This is especially important as we have permission protected, confidential information in parts of our Wiki.. yet when those pages are updated, all Watchers receive a full copy of the page in their email, which adds additional visibility and security concerns.

    Hello,

    I'm testing Confluence 4.3.2.

How do I revove people from being watcher of a page.

In the tool panel, on the observer link, i still appear on the left list showing all the observer of a page.

Even if I delete myself and other collegues that have edited once the page, the name still show again after a refresh of the page...?

    Not sure to understand.

I would like people to be removed "voluntary" from any list and it seems that as soon I have edited a content, i cannot stop the watch to send mail.

The only option is to untick the "notify the observer"...

    Am I correct ?

When I update a page and uncheck the "notify watchers" box, my users who are watching the whole space that the page is in still get a notification of the edit. Is this by design, or is this a glitch?

I'd like to be able to have users watch the whole space, but also be able to keep them from getting dozens of notifications when I'm updating a lot of content or doing testing of certain features/formatting.

Hi Alice,  I haven't been able to replicate your problem.  When I watch a whole space, and then (as a different user) edit a page and deselect the notify watchers, I do not get a notification.

There are some actions in Confluence 5.4 and earlier that will send a notification, for example adding an attachment, but that was fixed in Confluence 5.5.

Perhaps create a support request so that it can be investigated further.

I tried to find the Descendent Notification Plugin but it has been archived. I would really like to force a space watch, or at worst, be able to force a Page Watch where the child pages are automatically watched. I'm an admin.
