Configuring HipChat Server
This page describes how to configure HipChat Server after you have deployed it.

Configuring HipChat Server in the UI
- Browse to the newly created instance by entering the IPv4 address or the hostname as the URL. For example:
https://IPv4
orhttps://hipchat.fully-qualified-domain-name.com
- The first time you browse to your HipChat Server web UI a configuration wizard will guide you through the initial configuration.
- Follow the steps in the configuration wizard to finish installing HipChat Server.
Hint: When you're finished you'll have to wait a few minutes for the settings to be applied and services to restart. Afterwards your browser may redirect to the sign In page, but for an ideal experience... - Browse to the new fully qualified domain name you've configured for your server, e.g.
https://hipchat.yourcompany.com
- Log into the HipChat Server web user interface (UI) using your administrator email and password you configured during the setup wizard.
Updating your HipChat Server's SSL key and certificate
- Create or obtain an SSL key and certificate pair in PEM format.
Important: Do not encrypt the key. Remove the passphrase, if necessary. - Log in to HipChat Server
- Click the Server admin tab at the top of the page.
- Click the SSL tab in the middle of the page.
- Paste in the PEM format private key and certificate text.
- Click Modify to apply the key and certificate pair.
Note: Services are restarted with the new SSL. They can take a few minutes to restart.
Updating your HipChat Server's Fully Qualified Domain Name
- Log in to HipChat Server. For example:
https://hipchat.fully-qualified-domain-name.com or https://IPv4 - Click the Server admin tab at the top of the page.
- Click the Network tab in the middle of the page.
- Update the hostname and domain name.
- Click Save to apply the new hostname and domain name.
Note: Services are restarted with the new FQDN. They can take a few minutes to restart. - Ensure your DNS services are correctly pointing traffic for your new FQDN to the HipChat Server IP Address or via CNAME.
Limiting filtering and relay rejection
Optionally, you can configure the system to use an SMTP smarthost or relay host to limit filtering and relay rejection.
- Click the Server admin tab.
- Click the Email tab
- In the Smart Relay Host field, enter the SMTP server's domain (and port, if necessary). For example, smtp.example.com:587
Note: To disable using an SMTP relay, altogether, leave the field empty. - In the Smart Relay User and password fields, enter the SASL authentication credentials.
- In the Sender Email Address field, enter the email address from which you are sending emails.
Changing the default group name
By default, the group name in HipChat is "Everyone." You can change it to the name of your organization.
Click the Group admin tab, then update the Group name, Everyone, to the name of your organization.
Inviting other evaluators
You can share the Invite URL with other evaluators.
- Click the Group admin tab.
- Click the Features tab.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page.
- Copy the Invite URL and share it with other evaluators.
Configure your user directories for use with HipChat Server
