Testing your Installation
This page describes how to test HipChat Server with a few teammates before you roll HipChat Server out to your whole organization.
Add some teammates
Add a few teammates to help you test HipChat Server.
This page
- Click the Group admin tab.
- Click the Users tab.
- Type the first and last name of a teammate who will be helping you test in the Full name field.
- In the @mention name field, type the name you will use to mention the teammate in HipChat. @mentions are a way of getting someone's attention in HipChat rooms. People can choose to be notified when mentioned in rooms. For more details, see Get going in HipChat.
- Type the teammate's email address in the Email field.
- Select the teammate's role. You can make the teammate a user or an admin:
- A user can use the HipChat apps to chat with other people in your organization.
- An admin has access to all the group and server administration features in HipChat Server.
- Click Add User.
Test the HipChat apps
Test the HipChat web, desktop, and mobile apps with your teammates.
Here are some suggestions on what to test:
- Create rooms, both public and private.
- Invite your teammates to the rooms.
- Type messages back and forth in the rooms.
- Add images and files.
- Try out emoticons.
- Open a one-on-one chat session.
- Try a voice and video call.
Test the HipChat web app
- Open a web browser and browse to the URL for your HipChat web app. For example, browse to https://hipchat.yourcompany.com.
- Click the My account tab at the top.
- Click the Launch the web app link.
The web app opens and shows HipChat's lobby. The lobby lists all the rooms and users in HipChat. Because you just installed HipChat Server, there's only one room and user. - Click Create Room and fill out the form to create a room.
- Click Room actions > Invite someone and fill out the form to invite your teammates to the room.
- Type some messages in the chat field at the bottom of the page.
- Click the paperclip to add images or files, or drag and drop the images or files into the room.
- Type emoticons, like (yey) , (success) , or (hipchat) .
- Double-click a teammate's name in the people list to chat with your teammate one-on-one.
- Click to start a video call with the same teammate.
- Click to start a voice call with the teammate.
If you're unable to access the HipChat web app or your images, files, or emoticons don't render, make sure you've installed a valid, signed SSL certificate.
