Summary

This article explains some of the differences between Deleted and Canceled in Jira Align, and what happens when we introduce the Jira Connector into the mix.

Solution

Jira Align - Choosing Deleted or Canceled

In Jira Align, we have a distinction between deleted and canceled items. And you can find both in the Recycle Bin and Canceled Items.

When you delete a work item in Jira Align, it will not appear in list views, as it is a soft delete it goes to the Recycle Bin.
When you cancel a work item in Jira Align, it will not appear in list views, and will be found in the Canceled Items.

To delete or cancel a Story, you click on "More Options" inside the Story Details panel.

Jira Align with the Jira Connector - Choosing Deleted or Canceled

When we add the Jira Connector into the mix, the behavior depends on how the Connector is set up. Jira issue Status numeric ID value is used by the connector to sync the Deleted or Canceled states.

Set status in Jira Story to Deleted

Jira

"Delete Item Status" is blank

Story in Jira Align: state does not change

There will be a mismatch between states as this state may not be mapped and could result in unexpected behavior - likely a different state will be synced back when changes occur.

Set status in Jira Story to Deleted

Jira

"Delete Item Status" is set to Jira Deleted status ID

Story in Jira Align: is hard deleted, it will not appear in recycle bin

This is a one-way only sync.

  • Setting the Jira item status to “Deleted” will sync up and permanently delete the JA item

  • The Jira item will remain

The opposite is NOT true though.

  • Deleting the JA item will NOT sync down and move the Jira item to “Deleted” status

Do not use this if you want to use the recycle bin (two-stage delete) process in Jira Align. Regulated industry customers may have processes to support requirements around who may delete items from production/ production support/development systems.
