Summary

If a Jira user moves a work item (story or epic) from a Jira Project that is integrated with Jira Align to a project that is not integrated, then the following symptoms may be seen

  • Changes made to the work item in Jira Align will continue to update the work item in Jira, even though changes made in Jira no longer update Jira Align. This happens because the sync from Jira to Jira Align uses the project configured in Jira Align > Settings > Jira Settings as a basis to pull changes from Jira, however, the sync from Jira Align to Jira uses the numeric ID of the work item to directly push updates into the item in Jira (and the numeric ID does not change when a work item is moved in Jira)

  • the weblink in the Jira work item (that connects to Jira Align) will still be present and still open the associated work item in Jira Align

  • the View in Jira link in the Jira Align work item will still be present and still open the associated work item in Jira

This article provides details of how to perform such a move that handles the various issues

Solution

If planning to move Epics or Stories (work items) in Jira, from a Jira Align Integrated project to a non-integrated project, perform the following steps:

  1. Move the work items to the non-integrated project

  2. Clone all the moved work items in the new project - this removes the weblinks and creates new numeric IDs against the clones in Jira.

  3. Update each clone of a work item so that it is linked to valid sprints in the new project and correct any Epic <-> Story relationships

  4. Delete the original (moved) stories from the Jira Project

  5. In Jira Align go to Settings > Jira Management > Jira Deleted Issues and schedule a Check for Deleted Issues

  6. Check back in this screen after the Check for Deleted Issues has run

  7. Select the affected work items and Depending on whether you want the work items to be removed from Jira Align or not, choose from Delete or Remove Jira Key - removing the Jira Key will remove the View in Jira option in the work item and stop Jira Align attempting to update changes to Jira.
