Summary

Whenever a new Sprint is started, one of the Epic issue types appears on the Active Sprint Board although the child issues of the Epic are not added to the Sprint.

Environment

Jira Cloud

Diagnosis

  • Epic issue type appears in the Active Sprints

  • From the Backlog section, click on the Epic from the Epic panel and confirm that its child issues are not added to the active sprint

  • On reviewing the history section of the Epic issue, noticed that the issue was converted from a standard issue type to an Epic. The Sprint value was set on this standard issue type.

Cause

Whenever an issue type is assigned to an active sprint and then the issue type is converted, the converted issue will still show up on the board.

Solution

  • Add the Sprint field to the Epic issue types from Project Settings > Issues > Screens
  • Navigate to the screen associated with the Epic issue type
  • Search for "Sprint" and add it
  • Once the field is added to the Epic, you would see the previously set Sprint value.

  • Clear this value and then remove the Sprint field from the screen. The Epic will be removed from the active sprint
