Environment

Jira Server/Data Center on 8.0.0 or any higher version

Resolution

In this example, we will be setting the default issue type to "Story":

  1. Log into the Jira application as a Jira administrator
  2. Click on Projects from the Top Bar menu and choose the appropriate project
  3. Click on the  icon at the bottom left corner, in order to show the Administration panel for the project:
  4. Click on Issue Types from the Administration panel, then click on the Actions button on the right side and Select Edit Issue Types.
(warning) Note that if you do not see the Action button, it is likely because you are not logged in as a Jira Administrator.

  5. Locate the Default Issue Type field -> Select the appropriate Issue type you would like to display as default. In this example, we will pick "Story".
  6. Reorder the Issue Types for Current Scheme to place the Issue type you would like to display as default right on top of the order. You can drag and drop the boxes.

  7. Click the Save button below.
