Symptoms
This KB article describes a way to set the default issue type that is displayed when a user creates an issue for the first time in Jira, and in a specific project.
Please note that:
- This solution will only take effect on the first time an issue is created in Jira
- The next time the same user creates a new Issue, the last issue type used will be displayed in the Create issue screen, and this issue type will overwrite the default issue type configured in any project
- This behavior will happen:
- regardless if the user is still logged in or has logged out and logged back in
- regardless of the project selected in the Create Issue screen
- On Jira Cloud, this is the expected behavior.
- For additional flexibility in configuring the default Issue Type, you can vote and/or watch the following feature requests
- On Jira Server/Data Center, this behavior exists due to the following bugs:
- You need to be logged in a Jira Administrator to implement this solution, otherwise you will not be able to configure the default issue type
Environment
- Jira Server/Data Center on 8.0.0 or any higher version
- Or Jira Cloud
Resolution
In this example, we will be setting the default issue type to "Story":
- Log into the Jira application as a Jira administrator
- Click on Projects from the Top Bar menu and choose the appropriate project
- Click on the ⚙ icon at the bottom left corner, in order to show the Administration panel for the project:
- Click on Issue Types from the Administration panel, then click on the Actions button on the right side and Select Edit Issue Types.
Note that if you do not see the Action button, it is likely because you are not logged in as a Jira Administrator.
- Locate the Default Issue Type field -> Select the appropriate Issue type you would like to display as default. In this example, we will pick "Story".
- Reorder the Issue Types for Current Scheme to place the Issue type you would like to display as default right on top of the order. You can drag and drop the boxes.
- Click the Save button below.
