Problem

The user is unable to trigger '@' mention within JIRA fields, no dropdown with user names appears:

The below solution only applies if a user(s) cannot use mentions at all. If only specific users cannot be mentioned, and/or only some Issues are affected, you may want to check the Issue Security settings. If a user does not have permission to browse an issue, they cannot be mentioned in it.

Resolution

Permission to @ mention users relies upon:

  • The Global Permission to the 'Browse users and groups';
  • Wiki Style Rendering for the affected field.

To fix this issue, you will need to check these configurations.

Browse users and groups permission

Permission to 'Browse users and groups' indicate which groups have permission to browse the names of users and groups within Jira. Users who are not part of a group with this permission are unable to @ mention users. Read more about Global permissions on Manage global permissions.

  1. Go to Settings > System > Global Permissions.
  2. Find permission Browse users and groups to review the groups with this permission.
  3. Check if the affected user is in one of the groups with this permission.

To grant permission to more groups, scroll down to the bottom of the Global Permissions page, pick the permission and group, and confirm the update by clicking Add.

Alternatively, if you are a site administrator you can also add the user to a group that already has this permission. Please notice this will also grant the added user permission wherever the group is used.

Wiki Style Rendering:

Text fields in Jira may use two types of renderers:

  • Default text renderer: renders a field's content as plain text.
  • Wiki style renderer: allows a user to enter wiki markup to produce HTML content.

A user will only be able to mention other users if the affected field uses Wiki style renderer. Read more about this on Configure renderers.

  1. Select Settings > Issues.

  2. Under FIELDS, select Field Configurations to view all your field configurations.

  3. Locate the field of interest to check which renderer it uses.

To update it, click Renderers select Wiki style renderer, and confirm the change by clicking Update.

Description

Unable to activate the '@' mention within JIRA fields. Note that the below solution only applies if a user(s) cannot use mentions at all. If only specific users cannot be mentioned, and/or only some Issues are affected, you may want to check on the Issue security settings. If a user is not permitted to view an Issue, they could not be mentioned in it.
