Bitbucket Data Center 9.4 is a Long Term Support release
This means we’ll continue to backport critical security and product bug fixes to 8.19 throughout its standard 2-year support window. In addition, when architecturally possible, we’ll also backport all other security bug fixes.
This allows you to get the maximum value from our continuous product development without strictly keeping up with the frequent release cadence.
Long Term Support releases are designed specifically for larger, more complex instances – ones that require significant planning and effort to upgrade. We understand that upgrades for such instances can be few and far between, and so every one of them needs to count. So, if you can manage only one feature release upgrade every year, make sure it is to the latest LTS release.
Check out the Atlassian Data Center Bug Fix Policy and Security Bug Fix policies for more information.

Prevent branch creation with new permission
For: ADMINS
We’ve added a new permission that restricts the creation of new branches in repositories to authorized users only. This permission can be enforced on a branching pattern like release/* or a branching model like Development or Release. It can be used as part of a cascading merge workflow to prevent unauthorized branch creation. When this permission is applied, unauthorized users attempting to create restricted branches will see an error.
Other changes and improvements
Security enhancements
We continue hardening our security posture. Starting from Bitbucket Data Center 9.4, users are required to provide their password when updating their email. You can disable this feature at any time.
To do this, in the bitbucket.properties
file, set the property feature.enforce.password.user.email.update
to false
. Then, restart Bitbucket for the changes to take effect. If you run a Bitbucket cluster, a rolling restart is enough to apply the configuration properties you set to enable the features.
Discovering Bitbucket Cloud resources made easy
You can now access Atlassian Cloud resources in the administration area. We have included links to the Bitbucket Cloud Migration Assistant (BCMA), a Cloud Migration Trial, and additional resources for you to explore Bitbucket Cloud.
