The Optimization tab connects your Jira or Confluence Data Center instance to Portfolio insights in Atlassian Administration. There, Instance health shows optimization, performance, and security insights for your instance, with recommendations to act on. Learn more about Instance health
Use the tab to send your instance's data to Portfolio insights: automatically, by connecting your instance, or once, by uploading a support zip. After you connect, you can also check the connection, turn data sending on or off, and review what your instance sends.
Before you begin
Permissions: to use the Optimization tab, you need the System administrator global permission. To connect your instance, you also need access to an organization in Atlassian Administration. Create or use an organization
App version: keep the Troubleshooting and Support Tools app up to date. Your product may include an older version of the app, which shows an older version of this tab.
Instance health requirements: Instance health also needs JMX and IPD monitoring and, on most versions, the Portfolio Insights app. The tab helps you check them.
Send your data to Portfolio insights
Until your instance connects for the first time, the Optimization tab shows the setup steps. Complete Before you start, then choose how to send your data.
Before you start: what you need, whichever way you send your data.
Preview the data: download the data your instance would send, before you connect.
Connect your instance: send your data automatically. This is the recommended way.
Upload data manually: upload your data once, if your instance can't reach Atlassian cloud.
Complete Before you start
To prepare your instance:
Open Troubleshooting and Support Tools in your Atlassian product. Learn how to access Troubleshooting and Support Tools
Go to the Optimization tab.
Under Before you start, complete each item:
Have access to Atlassian Administration on cloud: select Open Atlassian Administration, or Create an organization if you don't have one yet.
Enable JMX monitoring and IPD monitoring: in Jira, turn on Enable both JMX and IPD monitoring. In Confluence, follow the link to the monitoring page and turn them on there. When both are on, the item shows JMX and IPD monitoring are enabled. Learn more about JMX monitoring in Jira and Confluence, and about In-product diagnostics.
If the tab lists the Atlassian Troubleshooting and Support Tools app, update the app in Manage apps, then refresh the page.
Optional: to review your data before you connect, go to Preview the data and select Download collected data (JSON). Your instance puts the data from every node in a zip of JSON files and doesn't send it. Learn more about the data your instance sends
Connect your instance
Connecting sends your instance's data automatically and keeps Instance health up to date. Your instance needs outbound access to Atlassian cloud.
To connect your instance:
Open Troubleshooting and Support Tools in your Atlassian product. Learn how to access Troubleshooting and Support Tools
Go to the Optimization tab.
Under Choose how to send your data, find Connect your instance and complete each item:
Install Portfolio Insights app: on Jira 10 and 11 and on Confluence 9 and 10, Instance health needs this app. Select Get app on Marketplace to install it. Jira 12 and Confluence 11 have no Portfolio Insights app, so skip this item there.
Network access: the tab checks that your instance can reach https://api.atlassian.com. When the check passes, the item shows Your instance can access the Atlassian cloud API.
Connect your Jira instance or Connect your Confluence instance: select Go to Atlassian Administration. Go to Insights > Portfolio insights > Instance health, select Add Data Center, and follow the steps. Then finish the connection in your instance, as the steps describe. To see the steps on the tab, select Show the step-by-step connection guide. Learn how to connect your instance
When Portfolio insights shows your instance as Connected, refresh the Optimization tab. It now shows the connected view. Insights can take up to 24 hours to appear.
Upload data manually
If your instance can't reach Atlassian cloud, upload its data once instead. Your instance doesn't need outbound access for this.
To upload your data manually:
Open Troubleshooting and Support Tools in your Atlassian product. Learn how to access Troubleshooting and Support Tools
Go to the Optimization tab.
Under Upload data manually, select Go to Create support zip.
Create a support zip that includes Performance and health data logs. Learn how to customize a support zip
In Atlassian Administration, go to Insights > Portfolio insights > Instance health and upload the zip. Learn how to upload the zip
After you connect
After your instance connects for the first time, the Optimization tab shows the connected view. The view stays even if the connection stops working later, so you can see what's wrong and fix it.
The connection status. Select Open Instance health dashboard to see your instance's insights.
Sending data to cloud: turn data sending on or off.
Data activity: when your instance last sent data and when it sends next, and a download of the data it has collected.
Recent submissions: what your instance sent in the last 3 days.
Check the connection
The status at the top of the tab shows whether your instance can send data right now:
You're connected to Atlassian cloud: your instance is linked to your organization and sends data to Portfolio insights.
Your connection needs attention: your instance can't send data, so data has stopped uploading. Follow the steps under the message.
Turn data sending on or off
Enable sending data to cloud is on by default. While it's off, your instance doesn't send diagnostics data or support zips to Portfolio insights, so Instance health stops updating. The connection stays, and Last data upload shows Sending data is disabled.
To turn data sending on or off:
Open Troubleshooting and Support Tools in your Atlassian product. Learn how to access Troubleshooting and Support Tools
Go to the Optimization tab.
Under Sending data to cloud, select the Enable sending data to cloud toggle.
Check uploads and review the data
Under Data activity, Last data upload and Next data upload show when your instance last sent data and when it sends next. To see the data your instance has collected and hasn't sent yet, select Download collected data (JSON).
Recent submissions lists the submissions your instance sent in the last 3 days, with their type, source, and summary. Select Show details on a row to see more, or Refresh table to update the list. Manual uploads aren't listed.
Learn more about the data your instance sends
Match hashed node names
To protect your privacy, your instance sends hashed node names instead of the real ones, so Instance health shows the hashed names. To find out which node is which, use the Node names in Atlassian Administration table at the bottom of the Optimization tab. It lists every node in your cluster by Node name and Hash node name.
When data is sent
Data | When |
|---|---|
Diagnostics data | Your instance collects performance and health data every few minutes and sends it about every hour. |
Support zips | Depending on your data sharing level, your instance also creates a limited support zip every few hours and sends it automatically. Learn about the minimal support zip |
Optimization insights | Updated once a day, at about 3 a.m. UTC, from the previous day's data. |
These are the default schedules. Your instance sends data only while it's connected and Enable sending data to cloud is on.
