Prepare your apps for upgrade
When preparing for Jira upgrade, you need to decide what to do with your apps as some might not be compatible with the version you're upgrading to, or might prevent your new Jira from starting.
Pick one of the upgrade scenarios and follow the guide to make sure your upgrade is issue-free.
a) You plan to test the upgrade in a testing environment first.
b) You do not have the plan to test the upgrade or you want to mitigate all plugin-related issues.
I'm planning to test first
1. Check if your apps are compatible with the new version.
- Go to > Manage apps.
- Scroll down past the list of apps from Atlassian Marketplace, and click JIRA update check.
- Select a version you want to upgrade to, and click Check.
2. Based on the app compatibility results perform the recommended action in the test environment.
Note that third-party apps may have upgrade requirements. Get familiar with these requirements as they might involve additional intermediate upgrade steps.
App compatibility results
Incompatible | Your apps are incompatible with the new version. Action: Disable these apps before the upgrade. |
---|---|
Compatible | Your apps are compatible with the new version. Action: No action needed, you're good to go. |
Compatible, if updated | Your apps will be compatible with the new version once you upgrade them. Action: Upgrade your apps before you proceed with the upgrade. When you run the Jira update check again, they will be marked as compatible. |
Compatible once both are updated | Your apps will be compatible with the new version once you upgrade both Jira and these apps. Action: Disable these apps before the upgrade. Once you're on a new version, you will install the upgraded version of the apps and enable them back. We've added a step to our upgrade procedure so you know exactly when to do that.
|
Unknown | We can't check the compatibility of this app. It usually applies to custom apps. Action: Disable these apps before the upgrade. Upgrade, enable the apps again and check how they behave in a testing environment. |
I want to mitigate all plugin-related risk
In this case, we recommend that you remove all plugins and install only the compatible ones after the upgrade.
- Get the list of plugins you have for future reference.
- Go to > Manage apps.
- Scroll down past the list of apps from Atlassian Marketplace, and click JIRA update check.
- Select a version you want to upgrade to, and click Check.
- Back up and then delete the contents of the /plugin folder in Jira. This will delete all the plugins you have.
a. on Server, go to<local-home-directory>/plugins
.
b. on DC, go to<shared-home-directory>/plugins
.
After you've upgraded, install the compatible versions of your plugins.
Done with the apps?
