Before you upgrade

  • Always check out the known issues in the Jira Knowledge Base, just in case an issue got found after the release.
  • Make sure that your licenses and add-ons are all up-to-date. Removing any incompatible add-ons before upgrading may help you avoid problems during your upgrade process. You can check the compatibility of your add-ons before your upgrade using the JIRA update check.
  • Follow the instructions in the general Upgrading JIRA applications guide, as well as the JIRA Software 7.0.x specific instructions below. The general guide contains important tasks that are essential for getting your upgraded JIRA installation to work correctly and, if necessary, migrating existing configurations. 

Upgrading to JIRA Software 7.0

If you're upgrading from an earlier version of JIRA and JIRA Agile, you need to upgrade to JIRA Software 7.0 before you upgrade to any later versions.

  1. Use the upgrade path JIRA 5.1 OR EARLIER → JIRA 5.2 OR LATER → JIRA SOFTWARE 7.0 The intermediary upgrade version is necessary due to upgrade tasks that were removed in JIRA Software 7.0.0. 
  2. Read the Upgrading JIRA applications page to determine the most appropriate upgrade method for your version and server setup.
  3. Please read JIRA Software 7.0.x release notes. We also recommend you read the Upgrade Notes for every version of JIRA you are skipping.

Migrating from Server to Cloud

If you are migrating from JIRA Agile 6.7 or earlier to JIRA Software Cloud, you need to upgrade to JIRA Software server 7.0 first. This is because some plug-ins need to be upgraded before you export the XML data for migration.
  1. Use the upgrade path JIRA AGILE 6.7 OR EARLIER → JIRA SOFTWARE 7.0 → JIRA SOFTWARE CLOUD 
  2. Read the Upgrading JIRA applications page to determine the most appropriate upgrade method for your version and server setup.
  3. Once you have completed the upgrade to JIRA Software 7.0, follow the cloud migration instructions in the Migration Hub.

If you have problems when installing/upgrading JIRA Software or using it after an upgrade, please contact our support team. This is the fastest way to get your problems addressed. The support team can work with you to figure out what is going wrong, and if there is a bug with JIRA Software, they will escalate it to our development team.
