Bitbucket Data Center and Server 8.5 release notes

11 October 2022

Introducing Bitbucket Data Center and Server 8.5.

Highlights include:

Redesigned permission pages to easily manage user permissions

DATA CENTER SERVER

We’ve redesigned the project and repository permission pages to help you easily manage user permissions and meet your compliance needs.

Users in Bitbucket can get permissions at different levels: global, project, or repository level. It can be hard for admins to see the effective permissions of a user or group, which is necessary to find out if excessive permissions have been granted at a higher level. This helps you check if the permission is already being inherited from a higher level and avoid the need to grant the same permissions at the project or repository level.

We’ve now redesigned our project and repository permission pages to display all user permissions (both explicit and inherited) and added filters to help you quickly find users and permissions even in repositories that have many users and groups. You can manage user and group permissions in bulk  and also select user groups to quickly explore members of user groups.

To help you create user permissions reports for auditing purposes, we’ve added the ability to export the global list of user permissions. Learn more about how to export user permissions

Additional configuration options to fine tune secret scanning

DATA CENTER

In 8.3, we introduced secret scanning at the global level to help you detect when secrets are exposed to the code base by mistake. Now secret scanning is getting an upgrade. Rules can be more granular and configured for projects and repositories. Admins can now configure scanning rules at each corresponding level, allowing you to tune your scanning needs. Admins can even exclude repositories from scanning at the global and project level.

You can now add an allowlist at the project and repository level to allow specific pattern matches and reduce false positives, giving you more control in discovering exposed secrets within your code base. Learn more about secret scanning

H2 database migration requirement

To achieve improved processing speeds, we’ve upgraded the H2 database to version 1.4.200 as it supports multithreading. Version 1.4.200 of H2 doesn’t support the PageStore format – if you’re upgrading from a version lower than 8.0 and using a H2 database for a Bitbucket Mirror or Server and, you’ll need to migrate the on-disk database file to the MvStore format. Learn more about how to migrate your H2 database to the MvStore format

Updates to supported platforms

Bitbucket 8.5 now includes support for running:

  • MariaDB 10.9

Get ready to upgrade

Before upgrading from an earlier version, check out our upgrade guide and upgrade matrix. Remember to renew your active software maintenance license too.

Renew now

As part of our new pull request experience from version 7.0 and higher, we have created a collection of new features for you to check out on one page, Enhancements to your code review workflow.
