Here are some important notes on upgrading to Jira Software 8.15.

For details on the new features and improvements in this release, see the Jira Software 8.15.x release notes

 Upgrade notes

Advanced Roadmaps is now part of Jira Software Data Center

Advanced Roadmaps is now part of Jira Software Data Center. See our FAQ to find out how this affects your site.

  • New to Advanced Roadmaps? Upgrade to Jira Software Data Center 8.15 or later to give it a try.

  • Have Jira Software Data Center but not ready to upgrade? You can install the latest version of the app for no cost.

Important info for Jira Software users of Insight - Asset Management and Insight Discovery

The Insight - Asset Management app is now part of Jira Service Management Data Center (read more about it in the Jira Service Management release notes), and the related Insight Discovery app is available at no extra cost on Atlassian Marketplace.

You might also be able to use these apps with Jira Software Data Center, depending on the following factors:

  1. Version: What Jira Software Data Center version you’re on
  2. Date: Whether it’s before or after February 2, 2023
  3. License type: Whether you have a paid license for the apps or are using the free versions
  4. Products: Whether you have a subscription to Jira Service Management on the same instance as Jira Software Data Center

See the following scenarios for more information:

Scenario 1: You have a valid (paid) app license

If you’ve purchased a subscription for either of these apps and it expires after February 2, 2021 PT, you can continue to use the app(s) until the subscription expiry date, regardless of which Jira Software Data Center version you’re on.

Once the subscription expires, if you’re on Jira Software Data Center version 8.15 or higher, you’ll need a Data Center subscription to Jira Service Management on the same instance to use the apps with Jira Software Data Center (minimal license for Jira Service Management is sufficient to enable Insight for all of your users). If you’re on Jira Software Data Center version 8.14 and below, you can switch to using the free version of the apps as described in scenario 2.

Scenario 2: You use the free app version

Jira Software Data Center customers on version 8.14 and below will not need a license for Jira Service Management to access the apps, and will be able to install a no-cost version of the apps from Marketplace as of February 2, 2021.

These apps will be available for two years, and will only receive critical updates. During that time, if you choose to upgrade to Jira Software Data Center version 8.15 or higher, you’ll need a license for Jira Service Management Data Center to get your users access to the Insight - Asset Management and Insight Discovery functionality (minimal license for Jira Service Management is sufficient to enable Insight for all of your users).

Scenario 3: You have a subscription to Jira Service Management Data Center

If you have a subscription to Jira Service Management Data Center on the same instance as Jira Software Data Center, your Jira Software users can access the Insight - Asset Management and Insight Discovery functionality.

Image attachments in email notifications

As you might have read in the release notes, we’ve fixed the issue with image attachments not being displayed in email notifications. Images now include security tokens that allow your users to view the images within 7 days, by default. You can change the expiry time in Administration > System > Advanced settings by editing the jira.security.image.attachment.jwt.tokens.expiry.hours setting.

Changes to email templates

For this feature, we’ve also edited the following email templates:

  • <jira-shared-home>/data/templates/email-batch/html/footer.vm

  • <jira-shared-home>/data/templates/email/html/includes/footer.vm

We’ve added a hyperlink to an article that describes possible problems with images caused by a disabled VPN or Jira not being allowlisted in Gmail. Here’s the article: Image attachments are not displayed in emails

If you’re using customized email templates, you can add this link too (both to help your users and keep the templates up-to-date), but the feature will work perfectly fine without these changes. For more info about editing email templates, see Customizing email content

Changes in the web.xml file for image attachments

While improving image attachments in email notifications, we've also made changes to the web.xml file. The changes include new paths to servlets responsible for image attachments. When upgrading, make sure to use the new web.xml file and copy your custom modifications to it rather then using the old file. Otherwise, Jira will look for old servers and attachments won't be displayed.

We've already had a bug related to this, you can see the details here: JRASERVER-41675 - Getting issue details... STATUS

Known vulnerability in the BKS-V1 keystore format

If you’re running Jira over SSL, we’d like to bring your attention to a security vulnerability of the BKS-V1 keystore format, provided by the BouncyCastle library. We strongly recommend that you don’t use it in your Jira instance. Learn more
